OLAP, Online Analytical Processing, is the interactive browsing of complex (multidimensional) databases in real time. Often the goal is to uncover performance indicators such as revenues in regard to certain variables such as article, department, customer or region. OLAP systems can thus be considered as tools for descriptive data analysis. Powerful Open Source tools for OLAP are Palo, by the Jedox and Mondrian company, which, for example, was integrated in the Open Source suite Jaspersoft. The following screenshot illustrates the slice and dice features of Palo, which allows simple browsing of the multidimensional databases:
