The terms Linked Open Data, Semantic Web and Web of Data are closely related. Linked Open Data refers to a collection of technologies as well as to a social phenomenon. The basic idea behind Linked Data is the use of globally valid identifiers for referencing resources. This reduces the integration effort required for the merger of databases on a specific topic to a minimum. Linked Data are typically published in W3C-Standards RDF (Resource Description Framework) or OWL (Web Ontology Language) format. An increasing number of institutions and public bodies are migrating towards publishing their data as Linked Open Data. These include governments, libraries, research institutions as well as corporations.
